"Discovery, Excellence, Integrity, Reflection, Exploration - the Pondicherry University Ideals formed the cues to designing the Convention Complex"

Commissioned by the Central Government of India the Convention Centre at Pondicherry was conceived to cater to the expanding needs of the Pondicherry University. The facilities include an auditorium with a seating capacity of 2500 persons – one of the largest auditoriums in the country, along with an entry foyer, separate VIP entrance & lounge, green rooms & canteen space.

Sited in Pondicherry, the design of the convention centre is deeply rooted in the culture and tradition of the land. The convention centre is inspired by the Pondicherry university logo, which depicts a lotus flower symbolizing Goddess Saraswati –the Goddess of knowledge and a rising sun –, the emergence of enlightenment and its universal spread.

As you approach the building the curvilinear form resembles an emerging sun reminiscent of the Pondicherry University Logo. An inspirational art wall draws you into the foyer adorned with traditional “kollam” art patterned on the flooring. Two grand sweeping staircases lead you to the balcony levels of the auditorium.

The curved entranceways lead you to the real charm of the project, the auditorium – The Lotus Hall. Taking inspiration for the university logo the ceiling of the auditorium is moulded in the form delicate petals of the lotus flower. Done up in a pristine white this lotus faceted ceiling not only gives a sense of beauty and calm but is articulated for premium acoustic and light quality through its perforations and offsets.

Soft LED lights dance on the petals increasing in intensity creating an enchanting aura as the audience takes its seat for a performance.
